English

A love of reading and writing is at the very heart of our Immanuel curriculum. English is central to a child’s development, as it builds on their ability to communicate effectively with others through speech, writing and drama, and to listen with understanding. We strive to ensure that our children develop a passion for English which will allow them to fulfil their ambitions and contribute positively to our community.

Writing

At Immanuel we use a variety of high-quality texts as the stimulus for our writing. From the classics to award-winning texts (Carnegie, Kate Greenaway, Guardian, Newbery and Caldecott) and celebrated and significant authors such as children’s laureates and poet laureates our children love our range of novels, picture books, wordless texts, narrative poems, playscripts and narrative non-fiction.

At Immanuel we always aim for our writing opportunities to be meaningful; whether short or long and that the audience is clear.  Using books as a context means that children have real reasons to write, whether to explain, persuade, inform or instruct.

Samprit (Year 5) - “I like using drama and art to help me write my stories.”

We celebrate writing throughout the year from daily handwriting awards, weekly ‘Writer of the Week’ celebrations to whole schools events such as Roald Dahl Day, National Poetry Day, 500 Words Competition, Story Telling Week, Writing Week and author visits throughout the year.

How to help your child

Education is a partnership and we aim to work closely with all our parents. We ask that in order to support your child in English, you encourage them to read widely at home to develop their love of books. We also ask that they see you as someone who enjoys reading and writing as this will impact greatly on your child’s spoken and written English. Any opportunities to write at home will help to develop your child’s confidence. These could include post cards, keeping a diary, shopping lists or even recipes.

We run workshops on how best to support your child at home with phonics, reading and writing throughout the year.
